Navigating Family Traditions: A Grandparent's Journey Through Holiday and Birthday Celebrations
As a grandparent, I've navigated the differences between my "tribe's" traditions and those of my adult child's in-laws, particularly regarding holiday and birthday celebrations. I've witnessed the downsides of disagreements over family traditions, which can lead to feelings of exclusion from decisions about gatherings and conflicts over how to celebrate special occasions.
In spite of my disappointment when my opinions are not sought or considered, I do believe that my grandchildren are gaining exposure to important cultural values that are shared by both families, making it easier to accept that my expectations won't always be considered. [1]
The best remedy for my unmet expectations comes when my children are open to discussing the traditions that matter to me. When they actively seek out my input and then incorporate traditions that are important to me into their celebrations, it increases my sense of being a valued member of the family whose traditions are respected.
As with most disagreements, effective communication has been helpful in bridging the gap between family members’ different expectations, especially when it comes to different family traditions.
Facilitated family conversations with a professional mediator can provide a comfortable space for everyone to express their views without judgment. This process can pave the way for continued dialogue while helping to preserve family relationships that are so important.
